The Bailey Theatre is pleased to invite applications for the part-time position of technical director beginning June 2018.

The Trail and District Arts Council (TDAC) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to foster the arts in Trail and District by providing services and resources to our local affiliated arts, cultural, and heritage organizations. TDAC also manages the Bailey Theatre in Trail BC under agreement with the RDKB according to the Bailey Theatre Business Plan.

TDAC has been presenting shows for over 45 years and are committed to bringing diverse and well-rounded professional programming to the region. The technical person’s primary responsibility for the daily technical operations of the theatre including lighting, sound, and coordinating necessary maintenance.
Applicants should have theatre and music production experience, excellent communication skills, must be detail oriented and highly organized with an ability to multi-task

POSITION: Technical Director

RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director (ED)


Under the direction of the Bailey Theatre Executive Director, the Technical Director is responsible for the daily technical operations of the theatre including lighting, sound, and coordinating necessary maintenance. The Technical Director (TD) works with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties. Because of the operating hours, close supervision is not required nor expected.


• Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.

• Purchase technical supplies.

• Plan and estimate future technical needs.

• Assist the Executive Director in creating the operating budget for acquisitions and maintenance.

• Maintain and repair building lighting and general technical infrastructure.

• Assist in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows.

• Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints and perform preventive maintenance on equipment.

• Attend occasional trade shows and training sessions.



• Work with touring artists to accommodate technical needs.

• Schedule and organize contract labour for load in/out.

• Manage contract labour billing (monitor hours and personnel).

• Organize back-line and all other equipment rentals.


• Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; facilitate the use of the technical facilities by the renter if applicable.

• Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.

• Supervise theatre groups during theatre use.

• Set up and/or operate sound and/or lights.

• Advise production managers, lighting and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervise the implementations of approved technical designs.

• Supervise workplace safety as Certified Actsafe Technician.

HOURS: Average of 50 hours a month. Hours fluctuate and are dependent on number of shows/rentals.

WAGE: $25/hour
